Dispensary Visit 101

Introducing Dispensary Visit 101 for everyone. With recreational dispensaries opening soon in New York State, cannabis retail may be a little overwhelming for the first time shopper. To make your first dispensary visit anxiety-free and seamless…

Keep your ID handy and bring cash.
Upon entering the dispensary, your ID will be checked and scanned. You will also be asked to provide your ID at time of purchase. Most dispensaries accept debit/credit cards, but be advised to pay with cash unless you don’t mind the additional fees. Also keep taxes in mind when figuring out how much you’re going to spend.

Relax and enjoy the experience.
There is no need to be nervous! Everything is legal and it’s nothing more than the equivalent of going into the liquor store. Everyone in the dispensary is there for the same reason–their appreciation of cannabis. Anyone will be happy to help you. You’ll also have the benefit of supporting a local small business, so that should boost your confidence, too!

Read reviews or speak to actual customers.
To get the feel of a new dispensary, there is nothing better than word-of-mouth feedback. You want to find a space that you’re comfortable going to, where your questions will be answered. Some stores are better suited for people than others.

Consult your budtender about what you’re looking for and any concerns you may have.
Budtenders are there to guide you through the process of finding the best product for your needs. Do you want something to relax you before bed? Are you looking for a creative boost? Are you worried about paranoia? Do you want pre-rolls or flower? Budtenders have been educated and will know what is best for you with the information you give them. Feel at ease that they are experienced, welcoming, and want to ensure you have the best experience possible. If you feel your budtender went above and beyond, you can always leave a tip. Most importantly, don’t rush yourself – get what is best for you and your money.

Prepare for a line.
When the first dispensaries open in New York, it will be lines out the door for the first few months, at least. As more open, consumers will fan out and the lines will die down, but do a little research to find out the quietest times and try to go then.

Write a review of your experience to help others.
Be part of the chain to help educate other people new to the industry!

Check out the accessory section.
This is a great place to find clothing, books, houseware items, and more. Always easy to find a perfect gift for the cannabis connoisseur in your life – and give a local dispensary free advertising.

Just remember that everyone at the dispensary is there to support and educate you. After your first visit, you’ll feel like a pro.
